Geophysics, geodynamics and tectonics investigations probe beneath the earth's surface to examine the mechanics of earth's mantle in relation to the lithosphere. Tectonic plates both translate across and are subducted into the mantle, processes which change the shape of our continents and are connected to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Prof. Stephen Marshak investigates how tectonism evolves into earth structures, such as the Brazilian Shield.
