Body
  • All new hires to the University must complete an I-9. Individuals who are currently active may require a new I-9, such as in certain circumstances when they are assigned to a federal contract or when moving from unpaid status to paid employment. Please contact E-Verify@illinois.edu PRIOR to a new hire starting work to confirm if there is an active I-9, or if a new I-9 is needed.
  • The employee must complete section 1 of their I-9 on/before their first day of work for pay in the US.
  • The employer must complete section 2 of the I-9 within 3 days of the employee’s first day of employment.
  • Original documents are required to complete section 2 of the I-9. The employee must present original, unexpired documents within 3 days of their first day of employment; photocopies of documents to complete the I-9 are not acceptable. The employee may choose which document(s) to present, and must either provide 1 document from list A, OR 1 document from list B AND 1 document from list C. Should the list B and C option be selected, the list B document MUST contain a photograph. Should the employee present a document combination involving a social security card, the social security card MUST NOT have a restriction. If the employee does not bring the acceptable original documents within 3 days of the employee’s first day of employment, employment may be terminated.
  • If the employee chooses to present an Employment Authorization Document (Form I766), Permanent Resident Card (Form I551) or U.S. passport card during the Form I9 process, the front and back of these documents must be uploaded to Tracker. If the employee chooses to present a U.S. passport, the picture and barcode pages of this document must be uploaded to Tracker. No other documents are to be scanned to Tracker.
  • Please contact Denise Madden if you have questions about common document combinations for your status.
